Meet Akasha Nickolas, Owner of WagWorld

Akasha Nickolas

We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Akasha Nickolas the founder of Wag World.  Wag World is more than just a dog-friendly venue—it’s a welcoming space where dogs and their people can connect, relax, and have fun. At the heart of this unique concept is founder Akasha Nickolas, whose deep love for animals and commitment to community have shaped Wag World into something truly special. We spoke with Akasha to learn more about her inspiration, her journey, and the mission behind this one-of-a-kind gathering place.

What inspired you to pursue your current career or business venture?

A strong need to challenge myself and create a magical place for dogs and their humans to relax, unwind, and play – where their humans can also drink, get high, and enjoy live music while their pups run free.

How has being a queer professional influenced your career path and experiences in the workplace?

It’s made me want to create a safe space where everyone is welcome – so long as they are welcoming. We’ve built a harmonious community of liberal, loving, open-minded, LGBTQ-supporting individuals.

What challenges have you faced as a queer professional in Western North Carolina, and how have you overcome them?

Fortunately, we’ve rarely encountered anything negative. Most people in my circle embrace who I am, and I’ve very rarely experienced homophobia.

What accomplishments are you most proud of in your professional journey?

By far, WagWorld. I’ve never been more challenged or prouder of anything I’ve accomplished. I love what WagWorld is today and am even more excited about what it will become.

What advice would you give to other queer individuals looking to advance in their careers or start their own business?

Not just for queer folks, but for anyone starting a business – I highly recommend QuickBooks. It makes life so much easier, especially when running four different businesses. As a lesbian, I never hide who I am. I try to project as much positive energy into the world as I can, so it comes back to me.

How do you stay connected and engaged with the queer community in Western North Carolina?

Mostly through Facebook – it’s a love-hate relationship.

Can you share a particularly memorable or impactful experience you’ve had as part of this business networking group?

Not much yet, but I love working with Tom.

What are your future goals or aspirations, both personally and professionally?

Professionally, I want to grow WagWorld into a household name in WNC and a destination for tourists. Personally, I hope to have WagWorld running like a well-oiled machine so I can travel the world while it’s managed by my pack.

How can the members of our networking group support you and your endeavors?

Bring your pups – or not! No dogs required. I just need all the support we can get right now as a growing business.

What role does the local community play in your success, and why do you believe buying local matters?

Almost all our products are locally sourced, and I try to sell as much local as possible. Supporting local strengthens our community and keeps the love circulating.
